CLADDACH ARTIST RESIDENCY

2026

An artist residency exploring the coastal environment of Girvan, Scotland – responding to the theme of ‘Claddach: celebrating our coastal community’

This project explores Ayrshire’s coastal environment through experimental paper making techniques, hosted by Crag Community Arts in Girvan in February 2026.

Over the course of the residency, plants were foraged along the shoreline and processed into pulp, creating sheets of paper that were then sculpted into large-scale surfaces capturing the character of the coastline.

The project is rooted in the idea that paper creates a portrait of place, reflecting the material character of a landscape through the use of local plants and water. Made from fibres suspended in water that are sifted and settle into form, the paper making process bears a close relationship to the environmental processes found within coastal landscapes: Continually reconfigured by tides, the shoreline is a liminal space that is shaped and reshaped into sculptural forms as materials are shifted and sifted by the ebb and flow of water.

This residency was part of the wider Lottery funded project ‘Claddach: celebrating our coastal community.’
